January 2016 - January 2019
VISION: Aquapioneers embodies the principles of a circular economy by locally producing sustainable food with technological solutions based on aquaponics. MISSION: Aquapioneers is dedicated to developing sustainable urban agriculture solutions using aquaponics, an innovative technology that minimizes the environmental impact of the food industry. Furthermore, we aim to facilitate the transition to new production models that prioritize our health and the environment through training and workshops. Aquapioneers has led the movement toward sustainable urban agriculture in Barcelona back in 2016, by offering a range of products and services that empower individuals to grow and access fresh, locally sourced food. We have designed and manufactured our aquaponics systems and services, both independently and in collaboration with the global network of Fab Labs.
After discovering Aquaponics from my uncle in 2015, I left my corporate job to start the Fab Academy at the Green Fab Lab of Barcelona. My final project was an Open Source Aquaponic Kit . During my first experiments at the Green Fab Lab he met Loic, who was doing his master thesis in Aquaponics at the Universidad Autonoma of Barcelona. Convinced by the unbeatable advantages of Aquaponics as a sustainable method of Urban Agriculture, we decided to combine our skills and savings to create Aquapioneers.
We started by improving my fab Academy prototype and beta-tested it in various places in Barcelona and beyond.
Then, we followed worldwide Hallam Murray Aquaponics course that gave use the knowledge to built a 25 m2 Greenhouse with Digital Fabrication to explore Aquaponics on a bigger scale.
This pilot farm is a small scale version of what could be an aquaponic farm on a rooftop in Barcelona.
This greenhouse allows us to produce 30 kg of fish and 300 kg of vegetables per year, which can feed 2 persons during an entire year.
After last year's encouraging results, we are launching this campaign to give us the means to increase our impact without compromising the Open Source nature of the project.
